Kate in South Africa, Winter 2011 - Post 1

I leave for Cape Town so soon and I could not be more excited.  From everything I hear about this country I know these 3 weeks will be life changing. I am going to the country earlier than the rest of group so I will have some time to explore before everyone else arrives. My travel partner and I have been planning  what to do during our time in Cape Town. I have been researching hiking in the area because exploring the terrain and sites is what I am most looking forward to. We are going to hike to the top of Lion’s Head Mountain. From the top we will have a gorgeous panoramic view of the city center, coast and other mountains. Given the snowy weather here in New Jersey I am very much so looking forward to enjoying the summer season of the Southern Hemisphere.

I am going to be in Cape Town for New Year’s Eve and I am very excited about it.  I have been researching the holiday in Cape Town and it appears that the place to be is Victoria and Alfred Waterfront know as the V&A Waterfront. This historic port has beautiful views of Table Mountain and Robben Island and on New Year’s Eve will have a fabulous firework display.

Of course going to a foreign country there is always something to be apprehensive about. Obviously, I am a little nervous about being in a new city with only one other person. In addition I am nervous about the food making me sick. However these feelings are mitigated by traveling smart and avoiding  non-bottled water.

When the rest of my group arrives in Cape Town I am looking forward to the trip to Robben Island, Table Mountain and the wine country.  The speakers we are meeting with are incredibly accomplished and I can not wait to learn from what they have to say.  Their words will be powerful and informative and I think I will push the boundaries of my mind more than ever before.

Until Next time!
